THE FAIRIES OF CLEANLINESS ON DUTY – A CONVERSATION WITH ONE OF TORNÁCOS’ HOUSEKEEPERS ABOUT THE DISCREET CARE BEHIND A FLAWLESS EXPERIENCE

At Tornácos, just like at other accommodations, many things seem natural: cleanliness, order and calm. And that’s exactly how it should be. However, behind all this lies the same consistent work every single day. We discussed this with our colleague Zita, who has been strengthening our team as a housekeeper for two years.

What professional steps led you here, and how did you end up at Tornácos?
“For a long time, I worked in retail as a sales assistant and cashier. Later, I had an opportunity in Austria where I worked as a housekeeper for 12 years. After that, I wanted to return to Hungary and a friend told me about a job offer at Tornácos. That’s how I ended up here, and now it’s been two years.”

What does a typical day look like for you here? Is there even such a thing as an “average” day?
“The days follow roughly the same rhythm. It’s more of a stable daily routine. We start with the common areas: the restaurant, corridors, restrooms and wellness area. Once that’s done, we move on to the rooms as guests check out. Various work rhythms operate at the same time. Some areas bring something new every day – new guests, new situations. The work behind the rooms is more predictable: the same steps must be carried out every day with the same attention. That’s what ensures a consistent experience for the guests. However, the pace is always determined by how many guests arrive and when the rooms need to be ready.”

What is the biggest challenge?
“Time. When many guests arrive, all rooms must be prepared with the same precision within a given timeframe. It’s important that everything is in order, no matter how many tasks there are.”

What gives you the greatest joy in your work?
“When I leave a room knowing that I, as a guest, would also be satisfied with it. Everything is in place: cleanliness, order, fresh scent. That’s the best feeling.”

Zita speaks with a smile and enthusiasm even after so many years of work. The job of a housekeeper may seem simple, but in reality, it involves many physical, mental and organizational challenges. Long hours spent standing or moving—carrying, climbing stairs, bending, stretching—are demanding, especially under time pressure. Using chemicals is also tough on the skin, while simultaneously being a “dust detective,” running an “bed-making marathon,” and "orchestrating the symphony" of guests’ varied requests.

Do you and your colleagues get feedback from guests?
“Yes, mostly when we tidy up the rooms of staying guests. They often comment on how clean everything they find, how organized the room is when we replace towels or refill the minibar. They thank us for our otherwise invisible work and that feels really good. Families with young children often give feedback. These comments are sometimes just a few words but they clearly show what really matters: cleanliness, order and attention to detail – the little things that make a stay truly comfortable.”

What would you recommend to someone visiting Tornácos for the first time?
“Definitely the restaurant, because the food is very good. I’ve also hosted a large family gathering here with my relatives and it went wonderfully. The rooms, too, are ideal for resting in a quiet, peaceful environment. It’s a great choice for families, especially because of the playroom. We also welcome pets and prepare a small package for them. The surrounding area offers plenty of activities, such as cycling.”

If you’re just getting to know Tornácos, it’s worth checking out our rooms and current offers—or tasting one of the delicious dishes recommended by Zita herself! Behind the smooth operation and order, there’s a lot of attention, smiles and, of course, a little muscle work! :)
