PAN-EUROPEAN PICNIC MEMORIAL PARK AND VISITORS CENTER IN FERTŐRÁKOS

A crucial and fate-changing event in the history of Europe occurred on the grounds of the Pan-European Picnic Memorial and Visitor Center: in 1989, hundreds of GDR citizens broke through the gates of the 'Iron Curtain', accelerating the spread of reunification of divided Europe.

On August 19, 1989, the Hungarian Democratic Forum organization in Debrecen and the parties of the Sopron Opposition Round Table announced an event called the Pan-European Picnic to promote the dismantling of the Iron Curtain and the idea of a common Europe without borders. At this event, hundreds of GDR citizens broke through the 'Iron Curtain' on the Austro-Hungarian border to continue their journey to the GDR. The spectacular mass exodus gave further impetus to the changes and led to the fall of the Berlin Wall. This was followed by the reunification of Berlin and Germany.
