ESTERHÁZY PALACE IN FERTŐD

The Esterházy Palace in Fertőd is one of the most beautiful baroque palaces in Hungary and is also known as the Hungarian Versailles. The 126-room castle, surrounded by outbuildings and a 200-hectare park, is the largest castle complex in the country and the third largest in Europe. The castle is 7 km from Hotel Tornácos.

The legendary figure of the family is Prince Miklós I “Fényes”, the builder of Eszterháza. The “Fairytale World of Eszterháza” reached its peak in the 1770s/80s: in the midst of celebrations organized with Haydn’s music and in which numerous artists took part – one of which was also attended by Mária Terézia – “Fényes” Miklós created the “Hungarian Versailles.”

Eszterháza experienced its second heyday during the reign of Prince Miklós IV. Esterházy and his wife, Countess Margit Cziráky. Adored and respected by locals, the Countess conceived and built the original rose garden in 1908, which was reopened to visitors after renovation in June 2016.
